The ongoing push to reduce cost in large solar projects is a driving force for all ground mount projects. The Engineer of Record (EOR) for the Buckthorn project, HDR, provided PACO with the loading and project parameters. Initially specifying a standard W6x12, HDR was looking for cost saving ideas. To meet wind, seismic, uplift and axial loading, a custom PACO 6 x 10.48 was listed as an approved alternate by the EOR. The 1.52 lb. reduction in weight yielded substantial savings in three areas – (1) less weight, (2) less tonnage to galvanize and (3) fewer freight dollars to move 25,000 pieces to the site.
